Current mood: worried

Oh God, I feel bad that I forgot to mention...
Cricket's cast came off today...for about thirty seconds. See, the vet said that if the bones haven't set after six weeks, she will need an amputation. And today, at the seven-week marker, it flopped around like the day she broke it. Shade will be making an appointment for surgery tomorrow.

We're all kind of devastated at the moment, although Shade is holding together creditably. And while I'm glad that she's not in any pain (she didn't react one bit when her leg moved, which probably means the nerves are dead), I'm kind of concerned for the other three legs. She's standing on twigs as it is, and removing one of her already meagre supports....

Ah well. We'll cross that limb when we come to it.

Well, you will need to watch out for the right front paw, as it will have to support twice the weight that it used to. Is the amputation going to be the entire leg or just at the joint?

This may be something to consider - though it is not the most elegant (or cheap) solution:

I...don't know. To be honest, we haven't seen a vet yet, but one of Shade's co-workers has training as a veterinary technician, plus has worked at wildlife rehabilitation centres and has experience removing casts, so we had her examine the splint, because a) we were working on the not-unreasonable assumption that the leg would be fine since it's a simple break with ample time to heal* and b) the vet wanted to charge through the nose for the same procedure. She rebandaged the leg and Shade will make a vet appointment on Monday.

And yeah, we're considering the various options to compensate for her newfound handicap.

*It's kind of like removing stitches for a minor surgery, only to find last-minute that septicemia has set in; e.g., while not totally out of the realm of possibility, it was the absolute last thing we expected. She'd had a compound fracture last year that healed fine, and now she has to lose her leg for a comparitively minor break? Unfair, man. Unfair.
